John Kong has been actively involved in the music industry for over 10 years. As a successful DJ, Producer, A&R, and Promoter, among other things, he has been praised for his eclectic sounds and versatility, creating a style that juxtaposes rare Brazilian grooves, with Jazzy rhythms, deep Funk, Latin beats, and other classic sounds. In the mid ‘90s, Kong connected with other jazz aficionados to co-found the globally renowned DJ collective MOVEMENT. Still strong after 8 successful years, their monthly parties in Toronto have attracted internationally renowned talents, including Keb Darge, Gilles Peterson, Rainer Trüby, Jazzanova, BITA, Koop, Mad Mats, Theo Parrish, Osunlade, plus other major players in that “eclectic style” field from around the globe. While enjoying the success of the MOVEMENT monthlies, Kong went on to create ‘Do Right’ in 1999, a live music/DJ revue showcasing the best and upcoming in Funk and Soul acts, introducing then new artists: Sharon Jones, Quantic, DJ Mitsu the Beats, Afrodizz, Kokolo, to a wider audience. In 2001, Do Right evolved and expanded its mission to become Do Right Music, Canada's only alternative dance record label, linking the sounds of Funk to Hip Hop, Soul to House, Jazz to Broken Beats, and everything soulful! Do Right’s current roaster includes an impressive list of artists such as Ivana Santilli, Circle Research, Basic Soul Unit, Anonymous Twist, and many more to come this year!
His production credits date back to 2002 with his collaboration with Moonstarr on the track 'Future Vision', which was immediately picked up by Fluid Ounce in the UK. Now considered a classic, ‘Future Vision’ was played and charted by "Future jazz & broken-beats" DJs worldwide, establishing Kong as a vital innovative voice on the international Electronica scene. As a busy A&R man for Do Right Music, Kong still manages to find time to DJ aboard at venue such as Jazz Café London; and to work on remixes for established artists such as FEIST, & Hird under his production alias ‘Do Right Mix”. Most recently, Kong has just finished his first jazz project producing the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio. Their highly anticipated album “Start To Move’ is due out in Fall 2006, already creating a buzz in the Jazz Dance circuit.
